Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about building worlds with RealmWright.

Getting Started

What is RealmWright?+

RealmWright is a world-building platform for fiction writers, D&D dungeon masters, and game designers. It lets you build fictional worlds where every character, location, faction, and event exists simultaneously on an interactive map, a knowledge graph, and a navigable timeline. Everything stays connected and in sync across all three surfaces.

Is RealmWright free to use?+

RealmWright offers a free tier that includes full access to the core world-building tools — maps, knowledge graphs, timelines, and entity management.

What kind of worlds can I build?+

Any fictional world — high fantasy, sci-fi, historical fiction, D&D campaigns, novel settings, game worlds, alternate histories. RealmWright is genre-agnostic. If your world has characters, places, factions, and events that change over time, RealmWright is built for it.

World Building

What are entities?+

Entities are the building blocks of your world. There are six types: Characters (people, creatures, NPCs), Locations (cities, dungeons, landmarks), Factions (organizations, kingdoms, guilds), Events (battles, treaties, disasters), Eras (ages, epochs, periods), and Articles (lore entries, manuscripts, notes). Each entity can have a position on the map, connections in the knowledge graph, and a time span on the timeline.

How do relationships between entities work?+

You can create typed relationships between any two entities — "born_in", "leads", "allied_with", "enemies_with", "participated_in", and many more. These relationships appear as edges in the knowledge graph and can also have their own time spans, so you can model how alliances shift and characters move throughout your world's history.

Can I import existing world-building content?+

Currently, worlds are created directly within RealmWright. We are evaluating import support for common formats in a future update. In the meantime, the entity creation flow is designed for fast data entry with minimal friction.

Is there a limit to how many entities I can create?+

Free-tier worlds support a generous number of entities. The platform is designed to handle worlds with hundreds of interconnected entities across all surfaces without performance issues.

Maps & Canvas

How does the map work?+

RealmWright uses a custom coordinate system (not real-world geography) so your fictional maps work correctly. You can upload your own map images. Entities are pinned to the map at pixel coordinates, and each entity type has a distinct colour and shape — blue circles for characters, green diamonds for locations, red shields for factions, purple stars for events.

Can I use my own map image?+

Yes. Upload any image file as your world map. RealmWright will use it as the canvas for placing entity pins. The map supports pan, zoom, and full-screen viewing.

What happens to map pins when I scrub the timeline?+

Pins for entities that do not exist at the selected time become translucent and non-interactive. Pins for active entities remain fully visible. This happens through CSS class changes, not re-rendering, so scrubbing feels instant even with hundreds of pins.

Knowledge Graph

What is the knowledge graph?+

The knowledge graph is a visual network where each entity is a node and each relationship is an edge. It gives you a bird's-eye view of how everything in your world connects — who knows whom, which factions are allied, what characters were present at which events. You can drag nodes to arrange the layout, and positions are saved automatically.

Can I rearrange the graph layout?+

Yes. Drag any node to reposition it. Your custom layout is saved automatically and restored when you return. The first time you open a world, an automatic layout algorithm arranges nodes for you, but after that, your manual positions are preserved. You can always reset the layout if you want to start fresh.

How are edges styled?+

Different relationship categories have distinct visual styles: social relationships (born_in, lives_in, knows) appear as thin blue dashed lines, political relationships (rules, member_of, allied_with) appear as medium gold solid lines, conflict relationships (enemies_with, defeated) appear as thick red lines, and temporal relationships (participated_in, witnessed) appear as thin purple dotted lines.

Timeline

How does the timeline work?+

The timeline is a horizontal scrubber bar fixed to the bottom of the workspace. It represents your world's entire history. Drag the scrubber to any year, and the map, knowledge graph, and entity list all update to show the state of the world at that moment. Characters who haven't been born yet disappear, factions that have dissolved fade out, and territories shift.

What calendar system does RealmWright use?+

RealmWright uses integer-based world years — simple numbers that represent time in your world. You can name your epoch (e.g., "Age of Fire", "Year of the Dragon") through the world settings. This keeps things flexible regardless of your world's calendar conventions.

Can I auto-play the timeline?+

Yes. The timeline has a play button that advances the scrubber automatically at a configurable speed (world years per real second). This lets you watch your world evolve over time — territories expanding, characters appearing and disappearing, factions rising and falling.

Data & Privacy

Who owns my world-building content?+

You do. All worlds, entities, relationships, maps, and any other content you create in RealmWright belong entirely to you. We do not claim any intellectual property rights over your content. See our Terms of Service for the full legal language.

Can I export my data?+

Data export functionality is on the roadmap. When available, you will be able to export your complete world data including all entities, relationships, and metadata.

Is my data secure?+

Your data is stored in a managed cloud database with row-level security policies that ensure you can only access your own worlds. All connections are encrypted with TLS. Authentication follows industry-standard security practices. See our Privacy Policy for full details on data handling.

Account & Billing

How do I delete my account?+

Contact us at support@realmwright.app to request account deletion. We will permanently remove your account and all associated data within 30 days of your request. This action is irreversible.

Can I use RealmWright on mobile?+

RealmWright is a web application that works in any modern browser. The interface is responsive and usable on tablets. For the best experience with the map canvas and knowledge graph, we recommend a desktop or laptop screen.
